Hong Kong residents woke up to a chilly morning on Sunday as temperatures in the city dropped to 15 degrees Celsius, or four or five degrees lower than those recorded on Saturday.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the mercury dipped to 15.6°C as a strong northeast monsoon affected the coast of Guangdong.

The Strong Monsoon Signal was in force, which meant strong winds with mean speeds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour were expected from the north.

“Locally, temperatures generally fell to around 15 degrees this morning, and were four to five degrees lower than those of yesterday,” the observatory said, adding that the maximum temperature could reach 20°C on Sunday.

Kowloon City recorded a low of 14.3°C, Kwun Tong logged 14.5°C, while Wong Tai Sin had 14.8°C. It was colder in the New Territories, with Ta Kwu Ling recording 13.3°C.

The observatory said the weather was expected to remain mainly cloudy and very dry on Sunday, with the red fire danger warning hoisted.

It would still be cool on Monday morning but temperatures were expected to rise gradually in the next couple of days, the observatory said, adding that the temperature difference between day and night will be relatively large over inland areas.
