RAMALLAH/GAZA/JERUSALEM/UNITED NATIONS - The Israeli army on Tuesday imposed a curfew on the town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin, and demolished the homes of two Palestinian prisoners during military operations in the northern West Bank, Palestinian sources said.

Ali Zakarna, a member of the Qabatiya municipal council, told Xinhua that the army decided to impose the curfew on the town "until further notice".

He said Israeli forces had been present in the town for several days and on Tuesday morning took over several houses to use as military outposts before announcing the curfew and restricting residents' movement.

In addition, Israeli forces demolished the homes of Palestinian prisoners Abdul Karim Sanoubar and Ayman Ghanem in the towns of Aqaba and Zawata, also in the northern West Bank, according to local sources and eyewitnesses.

According to Israeli media reports, Sanoubar had planted five explosive devices on buses in the Gush Dan area, set to detonate on Feb 20, while Ghanem, along with other Palestinians, reportedly carried out a shooting attack at Mehola Junction in August 2024, killing one Israeli and injuring another.

Palestinians killed in West Bank, Gaza

Meanwhile, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in separate incidents in the West Bank, according to Palestinian officials, while the Israeli military said troops were responding to a car-ramming and a stabbing that lightly injured three soldiers in total.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said 17-year-old Muhannad Tariq Mohammad Al-Zgheer was shot dead in Hebron and that Israeli forces kept his body. Palestinian security officials said the shooting occurred as Israeli troops shut down northern checkpoints during a manhunt after an Israeli soldier was run over at a nearby military checkpoint.

The Israeli military said one of its soldiers was lightly injured in the car-ramming near Hebron and that the driver was killed when troops attempted to arrest him.

In a separate incident near the village of Umm Safa, north of Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces fatally shot 18-year-old Mohammed Ruslan Mahmoud Asmar after a stabbing attack. Palestinian officials said his body was also withheld and that Red Crescent medics were prevented from reaching him.

Palestinian sources said troops closed all northern entrances to Ramallah, restricting movement in the area. The Israeli military said two soldiers were lightly wounded in the stabbing near the settlement of Ateret after the assailant pulled out a knife while being questioned. Ateret is an Israeli community settlement in the West Bank built on land confiscated from several Palestinian villages, including Umm Safa.

Separately, Tubas Governor Ahmad Al-Asaad said Israeli forces continued a large-scale operation in Tubas and the nearby town of Aqqaba, leaving the area under "complete closure" for a second day. He said dozens of homes were raided and some turned into military positions, describing the situation as tense.

Also on Tuesday, three Palestinians, including a journalist, were killed in separate Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian medical and security officials.

Medical officials said journalist Mahmoud Wadi died when an Israeli drone fired at least one missile at a group of civilians in the central area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. They said Wadi had been working in the area when the strike occurred.

In central Gaza, Civil Defense crews recovered the body of a young man killed by Israeli fire in the Bureij refugee camp. In Gaza City, medical staff at Al-Ahli Hospital said another young man was shot dead in the Zeitoun neighborhood.

The Israeli military said troops in southern Gaza shot and killed two people it described as "terrorists" who crossed the "Yellow Line" and approached soldiers. In northern Gaza, it said a drone killed another man it labeled as a "terrorist" after he crossed the same line.

Israel receives remains of unidentified body

Separately, Israel received the remains of an unidentified body from the Gaza Strip via the Red Cross, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement, adding they would undergo forensic identification.

"At the end of the identification process, and in accordance with the findings, an official notification will be delivered to the family," the statement noted, adding the remains will be transferred to the Ministry of Health's National Center for Forensic Medicine.

Before the latest handover, two hostages' bodies - an Israeli and a Thai national - were believed to remain in Gaza.

Gaza's call for help answered

Amid continuing reports of Israeli attacks in all five Gaza governorates, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said they answered a Civil Defense distress call and helped coordinate the rescue of injured people in Gaza City.

OCHA said the rescues occurred on Monday in the Tufah neighborhood, following a distress call from Civil Defense teams. Details of the nature of the distress call were not available.

The World Health Organization said its team led the medical evacuation of 18 patients and 54 companions from Gaza for treatment abroad, adding that more than 16,500 patients still need life-saving care that is not available in Gaza.

OCHA said that with winter approaching, the humanitarian community in the Gaza Strip is working to scale up the delivery of assistance to people in need, including children, who have suffered immensely over the past two years.
