Hong Kong athletes end National Games journey with best-ever results

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region team on Thursday concluded its National Games journey with its best-ever haul of medals — nine gold, two silver and eight bronze — 19 in total, surpassing its 2017 record of 16.

Hong Kong’s triumphs were achieved in sailing, cycling, tennis, swimming, rugby sevens, triathlon, and fencing.

On Thursday — the final competition day for Hong Kong — the team of Cedric Ho Wai-hang, Lau Ho-fung, Fong Hoi-sun and Ng Ho-tin finished sixth in the men’s epee team event after losing 45-44 to Shandong in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s team foil event, Hong Kong was eliminated in the quarterfinals after losing 45-36 to  Chongqing. Hong Kong finished sixth after a 45-40 loss to Zhejiang.

In the track and field events, Hong Kong failed to advance beyond the heats of both the men’s and women’s 4x100 meter relay events.

In the ranking round of baseball, the Hong Kong finished eighth.

Cyclists Kwan Tsz-kwan finished 25th and Yu Hoi-tik 27th in the women’s mountain bike cross-country final. Lai Chun-kin finished 27th in the men’s mountain bike cross-country final.

Hong Kong’s fencers enjoyed their best results in the history of the national sports meet, securing a historic gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

On Wednesday, tennis ace Coleman Wong Chak-lam won a bronze medal, the first-ever singles tennis medal won by a Hong Kong competitor at the meet.

They were not the only Hong Kong competitors to excel. “Flying fish” Siobhan Haughey secured the city's first swimming gold at this year’s event, and won a total of four medals, the most any Hong Kong competitor has won in a single National Games.

Cycling ace Ceci Lee Sze-wing concluded her National Games journey with three gold medals.

Triathlete Oscar Coggins captured the bronze medal in the men's individual event, while Hong Kong won a silver in the mixed relay event.

Sailor Nicholas Bezy Halliday triumphed in the men’s single dinghy ILCA 7 class, securing the city’s first gold medal on Oct 29.

The 15th National Games, cohosted for the first time by Guangdong province and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong, and Macao, finishes today. This is the first time Hong Kong has cohosted a national sports event, with eight competition events and one mass participation event staged in the city.

The closing ceremony takes place in Shenzhen today.

At the 14th National Games in Shaanxi province, 169 Hong Kong athletes competed in 18 finals, winning seven medals — two gold and five bronze in cycling, karatedo and fencing.
