Xi extends condolences over passing of Thailand's Queen Mother
By Ji Haisheng

President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence on Sunday to Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua over the death of Thailand's Queen Mother Sirikit, who passed away on Friday at the age of 93.

On behalf of the Chinese government and people, Xi extended deep condolences and sincere sympathies to the Thai royal family, government and people.

In the message, Xi noted that the Queen Mother has enjoyed high prestige among the Thai people.

Hailing her enduring contributions to the bond between the two nations, Xi said that the Queen Mother, who was committed to promoting Sino-Thai friendship, had visited China on behalf of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The visit took place in 2000.

She will always be remembered, Xi said.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn has directed the Bureau of the Royal Household to hold a royal funeral with the highest honors in accordance with royal traditions.

A one-year mourning period has been declared for royal family members and officials, while the government has called for public entertainment to be reduced and flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days.
