BEIJING - A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday urged people of Taiwan not to be misled or manipulated by the secessionist remarks made by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te.

In response to Lai's recent remarks, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, reiterated that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China, adding that this is the true status quo across the Taiwan Strait, a historical and legal fact that cannot be altered, and a universal consensus of the international community.

"Taiwan has never been and will never be a country," Chen said.

Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have stubbornly adhered to a separatist stance, denied the 1992 Consensus, and spread fallacies of "Taiwan independence", he said.

"Their actions undermine peace and stability across the Strait, harm the interests and well-being of the people in Taiwan and create serious barriers for cross-Strait dialogue," he said.

Chen called on people on the island to see through the nature of the DPP authorities as a destroyer of peace and a creator of crisis across the Strait, and work with the mainland to oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist actions and safeguard peace and stability across the Strait.
