New section of Longgang River Greenway opens on National Day

A new section of the Longgang River Main Stream Greenway (龙岗河干流碧道) opened on Oct 1, coinciding with National Day, enhancing the popular riverfront leisure space in Shenzhen’s Longgang district.

According to Shenzhen Shuiwu (深圳水务), the WeChat public account of the municipal government’s water authority, more sections – including three new wetland zones – are scheduled to open by the end of the year.

The 20.77-kilometer greenway traverses six subdistricts: Henggang, Yuanshan, Longgang, Longcheng, Baolong, and Pingdi, serving a combined population of approximately 4 million residents.

Since its first phase opened in 2023, the greenway has become a major attraction, receiving about 2.95 million annual visitors with a single-day record of 53,000.

Multiple ecological measures have been implemented, including strengthening flood barriers, regular dredging, tree planting, and installing facilities to protect native wildlife.

The area is now home to 49 species of birds, including National Class II protected species like the greater coucal and black kite, indicating a significant improvement in the local ecosystem.
