Two documentaries on President Xi Jinping’s economic and cultural thought are being aired in Hong Kong on Monday, two days ahead of National Day, to help the city’s residents foster a stronger sense of patriotism.

The two documentaries, produced by China Media Group (CMG), explore President Xi’s thoughts on cultural and economic development. They were broadcast by public broadcaster RTHK on its TV channels and websites, as well as by the Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group and dotdotnews.com.

Xi Jinping’s Cultural Story presents a vivid narrative of Xi’s commitment to preserving China’s cultural heritage and ensuring its ongoing development.

The program includes on-site visits to locations that Xi has worked at or inspected, including Zhengding in Hebei province, Xiamen in Fujian province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, and Dunhuang in Gansu province. Through a mix of video footage and in-depth interviews, the documentary provides an all-encompassing picture of China’s enduring efforts in the new era to track its civilizational origins and preserve its cultural heritage. It showcases Chinese culture’s profound, far-reaching, inclusive, and evolving nature.

Xi Jinping’s Economic Thought Series Lectures explores Xi’s ideas and thoughts on major economic development issues in the new era, reflecting the grand trajectory of China’s economic progress and its notable achievements.

At the launch event on Monday, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said Xi Jinping’s Cultural Story illuminates the deep cultural roots of the president’s governance philosophy and will help deepen Hong Kong residents’ appreciation for motherland’s long and inclusive cultural heritage, and of the efforts to trace China’s civilizational origins and safeguard its cultural relics.

He said that this year is important as it marks the transition between China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and its 15th Five-Year Plan.

Xi Jinping’s Economic Thought Series Lectures articulates the core tenets of the president’s economic approach, including his directives to drive high-quality development and foster new quality productive forces.

The documentary would help the public to understand the strategic rationale behind China’s economic progress and support the broader goal of national rejuvenation and the building of a modern socialist powerhouse.

At the ceremony, CMG and a number of groups in Hong Kong signed cooperation agreements to support several key initiatives. These include promoting the 15th National Games — the first to be jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao — and panda-themed and history educational activities.

Shen Haixiong, vice-minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and president and editor-in-chief of China Media Group (CMG), said the partnership ushers in a new chapter for cooperation with Hong Kong.

He said that as the official broadcaster for the historic 15th National Games, the group is committed to helping deliver a successful event, promoting Chinese sportsmanship, and showcasing the vitality of Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Zhou Ji, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, praised the decision to broadcast the two documentaries in Hong Kong, which he said would help Hong Kong society better understand Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

He said China’s confidence in its direction, theory, and system rests on a deep cultural foundation rooted in 5,000 years of civilizational heritage.

The “one country, two systems” principle embodies the values of peace, openness, and sharing inherent in Chinese cultural wisdom. These values belong not only to China but also to the world, he said.

Zhou said that since 2012, China’s economy has surged, and has become an engine of global growth. Hong Kong can play an important and distinctive role in the new era as the country advances its reform, opening up, and modernization.

“We should see through the clouds and stay focused on doing well whatever we undertake,” he said, adding that the SAR’s unique strengths should be leveraged to contribute to China’s overall development.

The two documentaries on Xi’s cultural and economic thoughts premiered in Macao on Sunday.
