COLOMBO - Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was arrested and remanded recently, has been granted bail on Tuesday evening.
The order was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, who directed that Wickremesinghe be released on three surety bonds of 5 million rupees each.
The case against the former president was taken up at the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court at around 1:40 pm on Tuesday. Wickremesinghe, currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, joined the proceedings virtually.

During the hearing, his attorneys presented a detailed medical report. They told the court that three of Wickremesinghe's four coronary arteries are blocked and he suffers from several other health complications.
His lawyers urged the court to consider these factors as exceptional circumstances and requested bail on medical grounds.
Further magisterial inquiry was fixed for Oct 29.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over allegations of misusing state funds.
It was the first time that a former president has been arrested and remanded in Sri Lanka's history.
