Fourteen companies from Guangdong province, including eight newcomers, have been named among China’s top 50 technology companies this year by Fortune China magazine, making up 28 percent of the total.
According to the list unveiled on Thursday, six giants — Huawei, Tencent, BYD, Digital China Group, TCL and battery maker Sunwoda — retained their spots. They were joined by eight new entrants including drone-maker DJI, laser equipment maker Han’s Laser, SF Express’ subsidiary SF Tech, genomics firm BGI Group, and autonomous driving startup WeRide.

Shenzhen led all Chinese cities with nine companies on the list, surpassing Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, reinforcing its “City of Innovation” reputation. Guangzhou contributed three new entrants, while Huizhou and Zhongshan had one each.
This year marks the second edition of Fortune’s China Tech 50, with a sharper focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. DeepSeek, a large language model startup that surged in popularity earlier this year, debuted at No 2. Robotics firms including Unitree, DeepRobotics and Rokae also made the list.

“As technology iteration meets market demand, Chinese companies are executing with speed and precision,” Fortune’s editors wrote. They noted that the firms are sidestepping hype to focus on AI applications in finance and healthcare, building more capable robots for hazardous work, and developing cleaner energy solutions.
