Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.48 percent to 3,683.46 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.76 percent higher at 11,551.36 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 2.15 trillion yuan (about $301.33 billion), up from 1.88 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to glass and non-ferrous metals led the gains, while stocks related to petroleum and brewery suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 3.62 percent to close at 2,496.5 points on Wednesday.
