HONG KONG - The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday slammed various organizations in the United States and other Western countries for, once again, disregarding the facts and smearing the HKSAR government for handling in accordance with the law the case of Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, an instigator of Hong Kong riots.

"The HKSAR government has emphasised time and again that as the legal proceedings involving Lai are still ongoing, it is inappropriate for any person to comment on the details of the case in an attempt to interfere with the court to exercise judicial power independently, which might otherwise constitute perverting the course of justice," said a spokesperson for the HKSAR government.

In fact, Lai's actual legal representative has already made a clarification earlier that Lai has all along been receiving suitable treatment and care in prison, the spokesperson noted.

However, foreign organizations primarily from the United States and other Western countries, including governments and the media, continue to distort the truth, blatantly discredit the judicial system and trials of the HKSAR, and make false and misleading statements by fabricating information about the treatment provided to Lai during his custody, in an attempt to glorify criminal behavior and exert pressure on the courts of the HKSAR, the spokesperson said.

"All cases in the HKSAR, including Lai's case, are handled strictly on the basis of evidence and in accordance with the law; the Department of Justice of the HKSAR, by virtue of Article 63 of the Basic Law of the HKSAR, controls criminal prosecutions, free from any interference; all defendants will receive fair trial with applicable Hong Kong laws, including the national security law in Hong Kong, and under the safeguards of the Basic Law of the HKSAR and the Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance," the spokesperson reiterated.
