The volume of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods increased by 4.6 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively, in the first two months of this year in comparison with the same period in 2024, government data showed on Tuesday.
Comparing the three-month period ending February 2025 with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the volume of exports and imports of goods rose by 6.5 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively, according to external merchandise trade data released by the Census and Statistics Department.
In February alone, the export and import volumes saw 13.8 percent and 9.9 percent, respectively, over the same month last year.
Changes in volume of external merchandise trade are derived from changes in external merchandise trade value with the effect of price changes discounted.

Increases were recorded for the total export volume to Vietnam (112.0 percent), China's Taiwan region (63.4 percent), and the Chinese mainland (28.7 percent) in February this year over the same month last year. On the other hand, total export volume to the United States and Indian decreased 19.6 percent and 27.2 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, the prices of total exports and imports of goods both increased by 1.8 percent in the first two months of 2025 over the same period last year.
Comparing February this year with the same month in 2024, the prices of total exports and imports of goods increased by 1.5 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively, according to the data.
Price changes in external merchandise trade are reflected by changes in unit value indices of external merchandise trade, which are compiled based on average unit values or, for certain commodities, specific price data.

Total export prices to China's Taiwan in February increased 5.7 percent year-on-year, the US 1.5 percent, Vietnam 1.0 percent, and the mainland 0.8 percent. The total export prices to India decreased by 2.5 percent.
Comparing February 2025 with February 2024, increases were recorded for the import volume from Taiwan (38.1 percent), the mainland (19.3 percent), and Singapore (1.3 percent), while decreases were seen in import volume from Japan (3.5 percent) and Korea (37.3 percent).
