Over 60 percent of Hong Kong residents are satisfied with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s third Policy Address which was published last month, a recent survey has found.

Among the new initiatives, the efforts to support youths on home ownership and eradicate low-quality subdivided units were particularly welcome.

The results of the survey, conducted by the Institute of Public Opinion Survey, came out as lawmakers kicked off a three -day debate on the blueprint on Wednesday.

Just days after the publication of the Policy Address, the institute surveyed 951 adults in Hong Kong by phone from Oct 19 to 28.

Some 60.3 percent of interviewees expressed different levels of satisfaction, while 24.7 percent said they did not support the plan.

Lee put forward a slew of initiatives to support young people’s desire for home ownership, such as helping under-40s living in private housing estates or living together with beneficiaries of public and subsidized housing units to purchase subsidized flats by allocating them an additional ballot number.

The move was applauded by 74.2 percent of the respondents, according to the survey.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s effort to enhance management of the rental of subdivided flats through legislation was supported by 64.1 percent of respondents.

In order to boost the tourism and retail industries, the government has proposed to the central government to restore the “multiple-entry” Individual Visit Endorsements for Shenzhen residents and expand the “one trip per week” arrangement to more cities, a move endorsed by 66.1 percent of surveyed residents.

The Policy Address also proposed to relax loan-to-value ratio for residential mortgages to bolster the property market, gaining support among 60.4 percent of respondents.

More than 55 percent of the respondents supported the government’s decision to regularize and increase the amounts of funding to Care Teams — a key initiative proposed in Lee’s first Policy Address to enhance district governance and provide caring services for the community.
