BEIJING - China's Ministry of Public Security has highlighted nationwide police efforts to maintain public order amid a three-month security enforcement campaign.

At a press conference held on Friday in Beijing, the ministry reported that since late June, a total of 535,000 criminal cases have been solved, while over 1.79 million criminal suspects have been arrested.

This year's summer campaign has also seen an 18.5-percent reduction in major road traffic accidents, compared to last year.

The ministry emphasized its commitment to eliminating potential security risks, noting the effective handling of more than 1,200 significant gatherings, each attracting over 10,000 attendees, and the maintenance of smooth traffic flow during the summer travel surge.

Additionally, Chinese police have contributed significantly to public safety during this year's flood season, rescuing 139,000 people and relocating nearly 1.6 million to safe areas, according to the ministry.

Over 6500 criminal suspects caught

The ministry said Friday that Chinese police captured 6,543 criminal suspects for organized crimes in a special crackdown during the summer.

During the special summer crackdown, Chinese police investigated 564 cases concerning organized crimes, and 3,404 criminal cases had been solved, according to Tong.

Telecom fraud

Chinese police have launched a coordinated operation focusing on 70 significant telecom and online fraud cases, the ministry announced on Friday.

This initiative, forming part of a three-month security enforcement campaign that started in late June, has resulted in the arrest of over 11,000 suspects allegedly involved in various fraud-related crimes and the dismantling of 347 criminal dens, the ministry announced at a press conference held in Beijing.

During the conference, Tong Bishan, a senior official from the ministry, highlighted targeted measures taken against telecom and online fraud activities involving Chinese nationals in northern Myanmar.

He highlighted the successful apprehension of a number of suspects allegedly engaged in such illegal acts.

"The rampant trend of telecom and online fraud in the region has been effectively curbed," Tong stated.

Football gambling

The ministry also said that Chinese police have cracked 825 criminal cases related to illegal football gambling and dismantled over 500 criminal gangs since a summer operation was launched on June 24.

These cases involve gambling funds amounting to more than 30 billion yuan (about $4.28 billion), Zhang Xiaopeng, deputy director of the ministry's bureau of public security administration, revealed at a press conference.

The ministry has prioritized efforts to combat the operation of illegal gambling venues during major football events, including UEFA Euro 2024 and the Copa America, Zhang said, adding that police across the country have been instructed to carry out special operations targeting football gambling.
