BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.68 percent to 2,939.36 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.10 percent lower at 8,697.22 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 677.6 billion yuan (about $95 billion), down from 724.5 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.
Shares related to online car-hailing led the gains, while those in the education and electricity sectors suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.06 percent to close at 1,651.11 points Wednesday.
