THE HAGUE — Judges on the International Criminal Court (ICC) have issued arrest warrants for Russia's former defense minister Sergei Shoigu and former chief of staff Valery Gerasimov, the court said in a statement on Tuesday.

The arrest warrants were issued on Monday "in the context of the situation in Ukraine for alleged international crimes committed from at least 10 October 2022 until at least 9 March 2023," said the ICC statement.

The Russian Security Council has said that the ICC decision is void, Russia's Sputnik news agency reported on Tuesday.

"This is shaking of the air, since the jurisdiction of the ICC does not extend to Russia, and was adopted as part of the West's hybrid war against our country," Sputnik cited the security council as saying in a statement.
