Minister: Gwadar port to act as key player of Pakistan's economic prosperity

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh said that Gwadar Port being developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will act as a key player in Pakistan's economic prosperity, an official statement said on Thursday.

Chairing a meeting to boost import activities at the port, he said that the government is committed to economic growth and regional development in the province and across the country through Gwadar Port.

Launched in 2013, CPEC, a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, is a corridor linking Gwadar Port in southwest Pakistan's Balochistan province with Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which highlights energy, transport, and industrial cooperation in the first phase, while in the new phase expands to fields of agriculture and livelihood, among others.

He said that measures are being taken to enhance operations at the port, and in this regard, the government has decided to import all state goods through the port.
