HKUST President Nancy Ip given Long Service Award

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on Friday presented the Long Service Award to its president Nancy Ip Yuk-yu for her dedicated service since 1993.

Ip expressed gratitude for the dedication of the university staff, saying they played a pivotal role in HKUST’s transformation into a world-class institution within a mere 33 years.

In 2022, Ip became the first-ever female head among Hong Kong’s eight government-subsidized universities when she assumed the presidency of the HKUST

Born in Hong Kong in 1955, Ip obtained a doctoral degree from Harvard Medical School. She returned to Hong Kong in 1993 and joined the newly established HKUST as an assistant professor and subsequently held significant roles including department head, dean, and vice president.

In 2022, Ip became the first-ever female head among Hong Kong’s eight government-subsidized universities when she assumed the presidency of the HKUST.

Together with her role as president, Ip is a renowned neuroscientist who has studied brain degeneration for more than three decades, earning her numerous accolades. Her research team has made significant contributions, including discovering the crucial roles of certain proteins in the human body for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
