Gangwon 2024 concluded, S. Korea wins golds in figure skating, snowboard

GANGNEUNG, South Korea - Hosts South Korea won gold medals in figure skating and snowboard events on Thursday, as the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games concluded at night.

South Korea's figure skaters claimed the team event that counts the best three scores in four segments: ice dance free dance, pairs free skate, men's singles free skate and women's singles free skate.

The US team clinched silver just one point behind the gold medalists, and the bronze went to Canada.

South Korea's Lee Cha-eun secured his second gold in the men's snowboard halfpipe final after taking the slopestyle gold a week earlier.

The reigning halfpipe world champion showed greater form than his competitors in front of home crowds to earn the best score of 88.5 points in the final.

Alessandro Barbieri of the United States picked up silver with 84.75 points, and Ryusei Yamada of Japan embraced bronze with 83 points.

Japan achieved a one-two finish in the women's snowboard halfpipe final, with Rise Kudo and Sara Shimizu racking up gold and silver each.

Lura Wick of Switzerland won bronze on 78 points, over 12 points off the pace.

British curlers edged out Denmark 7-6 in the mixed doubles gold medal game after beating Germany in the quarterfinals and Sweden in the semifinals.

The US triumphed over Sweden 7-4 in the mixed doubles bronze medal match.

European cross-country skiers dominated the mixed 4x5km relay event, where a team of four races 5km each with the first two using classical technique and the last two taking free technique.

Germany snatched its ninth gold at the mixed relay event, with France and Switzerland claiming silver and bronze.

A total of 1,802 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 78 countries and regions competed at the fourth Winter Youth Olympics featuring seven sports, 15 disciplines and 81 events.

Closing ceremony

The two-week winter event ended with a closing ceremony.

Chinese athletes claimed six gold medals, nine silvers and three bronzes, ranking third according to the order by a total number of medals.

The US topped the medal table with five golds, 11 silvers and five bronzes.

Young athletes from across the globe received a final celebration at the closing ceremony that was held in an open plaza in front of the Gangneung Olympic Park Hockey Center Auxiliary Field under the theme of "Shine again".

The theme encouraged the young athletes to shine again the 'light within themselves,' which they discovered during the competitions, and stride forward into a new tomorrow with the light cherished.

Hailed by volunteers, the Winter Youth Olympic participants from each country entered the closing ceremony venue.

The participating delegations' flags paraded into the plaza in alphabetical order of national or regional names in the Korean language.

During the ceremony, six athletes came to the stage and delivered a bouquet of flowers to six volunteers to express gratitude on behalf of all athletes who competed at the event.

A highlight video of the competitions was shown on the main screen after lowering the Olympic flag to the sound of the Olympic anthem.

The closing ceremony concluded with the Olympic cauldron extinguished.
