Zhang Yufei wins 50m butterfly at national championships

JINAN, China - Olympic champion Zhang Yufei said that she was delighted to win the women's 50m butterfly title on the final day of the 2023 Chinese National Swimming Championships.

Zhang was edged into second place by just 0.02 seconds in the 200m butterfly final on Wednesday, but underlined her strength in 50m by touching home first in 25.47 seconds.

The 2023 Chinese National Swimming Championships, which also served as a domestic trial for the 2024 World Championships and Paris Olympics, drew to a close on Friday

"Out of the eight swimmers, there is only one winner," said the 25-year-old Zhang.

"So one has to learn to accept defeats. Losing doesn't matter as long as you can learn from it.

"It feels like hitting the bottom and getting back up again," she added.

Also on Friday, Yang Peiqi from Hubei won the women's 800m freestyle title. Fei Liwei, Hong Jinquan, Zhang Ziyang and Ji Xinjie captured the gold medal in the men's 4X200m freestyle relay.

The 2023 Chinese National Swimming Championships, which also served as a domestic trial for the 2024 World Championships and Paris Olympics, drew to a close on Friday.
