Hong Kong athletes on Sunday continued their winning streak at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, with the city’s golf team nabbing a gold medal and a bronze on Sunday, and the soccer team making history by making the semifinals.
The golf team’s two medals were the team’s first-ever at Asiad.
Hong Kong golfer Kho Taichi claimed a gold medal in the men’s individual competition at the Asian Games on Sunday, bringing the city its sixth gold.
This year marks Kho’s first appearance at the Asian Games, and the 22-year-old performed steadily in Sunday’s final golf competition, edging out South Korean golfer Im Sung-jae by one shot to finish at 27 under par.
As for the men’s golf team competition, Hong Kong and Thailand had an intense match, with the teams trading the lead several times. After officials calculated the overall scores of the four Hong Kong players — Kho, Jason Hak Shun-yat, Matthew Cheung Hung-hai and Terrence Ng Shing-fung — Hong Kong ranked third with a total score of 50 under par, clinching the bronze medal. South Korea secured the gold medal, while Thailand took home the silver.
In another major breakthrough, Hong Kong’s soccer team made it into the semifinals, the best performance for the city’s team in the Asian Games, after defeating Asian soccer power Iran by a score of 1-0. Hong Kong soccer player Poon Pui-hin scored in the second half, making it the only and defining shot in the whole match.
Hong Kong’s soccer team now will face Japan in the semifinals. The Hong Kong soccer team’s previous best performance was making the quarterfinals in 1958.
At the 100-meter hurdles final, Hong Kong hurdler Vera Lui Lai-yiu failed to get a medal, finishing in sixth place with 13.35 seconds. Lui won a bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Asian Games in Jakarta five years ago, the first Asian Games medal for the Hong Kong track and field team since 1954.
Long jumper Chan Ming-tai, the Hong Kong record holder, failed to secure a medal in the long jump final on Sunday night, with Chan finishing in sixth place among 12 players. He had success in five of the six trial jumps; the second jump was the best, at 7.83 meters. The gold medal was won by Wang Jianan of the national team, with 8.22 meters. The silver medal was won by India. Another athlete from the national team, Shi Yuhao, won the bronze medal, with a jump of 8.10 meters.
The Hong Kong delegation has so far won 40 medals, with six golds, 15 silvers and 19 bronzes at this Asian Games, ranking fifth in the medal tally.
The Hong Kong delegation on Monday will participate in several sporting competitions, including squash, basketball, and baseball; most of them will be group matches. In the quarterfinal basketball match, Hong Kong will compete against Saudi Arabia.
