Construction of the first phase of the Sun Yat-sen University Shenzhen campus has been fully completed, marking a milestone in the development of the city's higher education sector.

The Shenzhen campus, covering 340 hectares, is the university’s third campus in Guangdong province after those in Guangzhou and Zhuhai. It comprises 17 departments and two affiliated hospitals, with more than 11,000 students and teachers, and is the second-largest in Shenzhen in student numbers. The project took five years to complete.

Shenzhen has been stepping up efforts to build more universities and colleges as it strives to nurture more talents to promote innovation.

The Shenzhen campus, which officially went into operation in August 2020, focuses on subjects that are in line with the city’s innovation-led development strategy and industry planning, including engineering, medicine and agriculture, according to Gao Song, president of the university.

More than 6,200 students have graduated from the new campus as of this month. Nearly 80 percent of them are now working in key industries and like clinical medicine, public health and artificial intelligence – the majority in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
