Olympic medalist Sarah Lee retires from professional cycling

Hong Kong’s renowned cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze bid farewell to her 19-year cycling career and announced that she is joining Hong Kong’s short-distance cycling team as a coach.

Lee made the announcement on Monday at her graduation ceremony at Hong Kong Baptist University, where she expressed her gratitude to the public for their support and love throughout her career, which she said had motivated her to become a good person and someone who can make a contribution to the city.

Lee said she had decided not to participate in the Hangzhou Asian Games in September this year after weighing up many considerations. 

The 36-year-old athlete began her career as a professional cyclist in 2004 and went on to win a gold medal and a bronze medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.

She represented Hong Kong in three Olympic Games, winning bronze medals at the London Olympics in 2012 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She is the first athlete from Hong Kong to have won medals in two Olympics.

Lee plans to hold a banquet in late June or July to thank those who have supported and helped her in her cycling career.
