Wang Zhelin powers Shanghai's first win, Liaoning survives

HANGZHOU – The Shanghai Sharks erased a 17-point deficit to beat the Ningbo Rockets 108-99, while defending champions the Liaoning Flying Leopards edged the Beijing Ducks 83-81 in the second round of the 2022-2023 Chinese Basketball Association season here on Friday.

Wang Zhelin started the game strong for Shanghai with a powerful dunk, but Ningbo responded quickly and gradually built a double-digit lead. Shanghai bounced back after a time-out to finish the first quarter with four points behind.

Ningbo shooters stayed hot to extend the gap to 17 points in the middle of the second quarter, but Wang led an 11-0 run for Shanghai to cut the deficit again as Shanghai trailed 55-49 into the break.

Michael Beasley and Wang combined for a 10-0 run to open the third quarter for Shanghai, while Ningbo's Li Yuanyu, who scored 13 points in the first half, was forced off with an ankle sprain. Shanghai then took the initiative and outscored Ningbo 80-79 by the end of the third quarter.

Wang led Shanghai with 22 points and five rebounds, while Beasley added 16 points and seven rebounds. Ningbo's Brandon Taylor scored a game-high 26 points as well as 12 assists.

Meanwhile, Liaoning beat Beijing in a close game as both teams exchanged the lead multiple times. Liaoning built a four-point lead with a bit more than one minute left, before Fang Shuo hit a three-pointer to cut the gap to only one point.

Liaoning's Guo Ailun was sent to the free throw line but missed one of the two free throws to give Beijing a slim hope of winning the game, but Beijing's Lei Meng didn't hit the final lay-up.

In the other fixtures on Friday, the Qingdao Eagles blew up an 18-point lead to swallow a 103-102 loss to the Shanxi Loongs, the Guangzhou Loong Lions beat the Sichuan Blue Whales 106-98 as Jeremy Lin only earned a five-minute playing time, and the Zhejiang Golden Bulls eased past the Tianjin Pioneers 105-83.
