Chinese boxer Xu to step up for WBA title against Benitez in May

BEIJING - Former WBA featherweight champion Xu Can of China will make his highly anticipated return against Mexican Brandon Benitez in a 10-round bout on May 20 in Florida, the United States.

In January 2019, Xu captured the WBA featherweight world title with a unanimous decision victory over Jesus Rojas of Puerto Rico in Houston. He defended the title later in the same year before losing the belt to British Leigh Wood in August 2021.

Looking to bounce back against a tough challenge in Benitez, a 24-year-old who enjoys an 18-2-0 record, Xu will do more preparation to better cope with the Mexican warrior.

In the co-feature, Chinese light heavyweight Meng Fanlong will meet former two-time world champion Jean Pascal in a 12-round clash for a top spot in the 175-pound division.

The 34-year-old Meng has been training in Florida, and noted that he can't wait to put on a good show with Xu.
