Turkey probes death of American journalist Andre Vltchek

Turkish authorities are investigating the death of an American author and journalist who died after traveling overnight from the Black Sea coastal city of Samsun to Istanbul, the Anadolu Agency reported on Tuesday.

Andre Vltchek, 57, and his wife were traveling inside a rented, chauffeured car and arrived at their Istanbul hotel at around 5:30 am on Tuesday. His wife Rossie Indira Vltchek tried to wake him up but could not do so, according to the Turkish news agency.

She called for emergency medics, who confirmed that Vltchek had died, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Turkish daily Daily Sabah said police recorded the case as a "suspicious death" and are investigating into it.

The couple arrived in Turkey from Serbia on Sept 12 and spent nine days in Samsun, his wife told investigators, NTV television said. Vtcheck had paralysis in one leg and diabetes and was taking two types of medicine, according to NTV.

On his website, Vltchek characterized himself, among other things, as a writer, philosopher, filmmaker, investigative journalist and revolutionary and globetrotter, who fights against Western imperialism.

He covered dozens of war zones and conflicts, including in Iraq, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, Rwanda and Syria, according to his website.

Vltchek authored numerous books, including On Western Terrorism: From Hiroshima to Drone Warfare with linguist and scholar Noam Chomsky.

He was a columnist for China Daily Asia Weekly, China Daily Hong Kong and China Daily Global editions.
