HONG KONG – Micronesia’s Honorary Consul in the Hong Kong SAR Tan Siu-lin donated US$1 million on Friday to China in its fight against the novel coronavirus.

The donation was made in Tan’s own name to Hubei provincial Red Cross through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the purchase of medical supplies for frontline doctors and nurses.

"I hope this can help China win the battle against the epidemic and strengthen the cooperation and friendship between Micronesia and China," Tan said.

Accepting the donation at a ceremony on Friday morning, Xie Feng, Commissioner of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, expressed his gratitude to Tan for his generosity to the Chinese people in time of hardship. Xie also thanked Hong Kong people who had donated supplies or participated in the battle against the virus outbreak in Wuhan.

He said the battle against the virus required concerted efforts of countries across the globe, with China building the first line of defense, giving other countries time to deploy theirs.

China’s socioeconomic development is recovering at a rapid rate amid noticeable decline in new cases of infection in the past weeks, said Xie.
