BEIRUT/UNITED NATIONS - Four people were killed and several others wounded in Israeli drone strikes targeting Mayfadoun in southern Lebanon on Tuesday afternoon, according to a preliminary toll reported by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA).

The attacks came despite a recently-finalized US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) aiming to end conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Israeli strikes intensified in the Nabatieh area, where a drone first targeted a vehicle in Mayfadoun before striking the area again after residents gathered at the scene. A second vehicle was later targeted in the same area. The attacks in Mayfadoun resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to several others, according to NNA.

Israeli artillery shelling also targeted the outskirts of the Rayhan area in the Jezzine district, while an Israeli drone struck a van on the Hadatha-Haris road in the Bint Jbeil district, NNA reported.

Israeli reconnaissance drones resumed low-altitude flights over Beirut and eastern Lebanon's Baalbek after a one-day absence, it added.

Separately, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on developments in Lebanon and the region, as well as the US-Iran MoU, read a statement from Berri's office.

They urged compelling Israel to end its military activity in Lebanon, and immediately withdraw from occupied Lebanese territory, among others, read the statement.

Also on Tuesday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met on the US-Iran MoU, and on preparations for the next round of Lebanon-US-Israel negotiations to be held in Washington next week, read a presidency statement.

They called for a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory, the deployment of the Lebanese army along the border, the return of Lebanese detainees, and the launch of reconstruction efforts, read the statement.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a press conference on Monday that the Israeli military would remain in the "security zones" it controlled in Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip as long as necessary.

The Emergency Operations Center of Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health said the cumulative toll from hostilities in Lebanon between March 2 and June 16 has reached 3,826 dead and 11,851 injured.

UN humanitarians: Displaced people returning home

Meanwhile, displaced people began returning to their homes in southern Lebanon despite challenges following news of a US-Iran deal, UN humanitarians said.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said some families are cautiously returning to their communities of origin following Sunday's announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran, which reportedly includes the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon.

According to Lebanese authorities, the number of displaced people hosted in collective shelters has decreased by about 10,000 people over the past four days. In South governorate, about 2,700 people reportedly left collective shelters on Monday, OCHA said.

However, the office said it remains unclear whether these movements represent temporary visits to inspect their property or permanent returns.
