TEHRAN/CAIRO/LONDON - The Navy of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) warned on Saturday that any "aggression" against Iranian oil tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy attack against one of the US military centers in the region and "enemy" ships.

The remarks were released in a post on social media platform X, following sporadic clashes that erupted between Iran and the United States in and around the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday and Friday.

Iran tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz beginning Feb 28, when it barred passage for vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States after the two countries launched joint strikes on Iranian territory.

The United States has also imposed a naval blockade on the strait, preventing ships to and from Iranian ports from transiting the waterway. The US military has attacked several Iranian ships and oil tankers over the past days.

In another post on X, the IRGC's Aerospace Division said that its missiles and drones have locked onto US targets in the region and ships of the "aggressive enemy."

"We are awaiting the order to fire," it added.

Egypt, Qatar call for ‘responsibility, wisdom’

Also on Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Jassim Al-Thani urged the United States and Iran to adopt positions characterized by "responsibility" and "wisdom" during this delicate stage.

During a phone call, the two top diplomats called for full reliance diplomacy to settle disputes, stressing the importance of supporting the negotiation process between the two sides, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

The two officials also reviewed developments of the negotiating track between Washington and Tehran, emphasizing that the sustainability of regional security and stability is primarily based on prioritizing political solutions in a way that preserves the resources of the peoples of the region.

Report: UK sends HMS Dragon ahead of potential Hormuz mission

Meanwhile, Britain is sending destroyer HMS Dragon the Eastern Mediterranean to the Middle East amid preparations for a possible multinational mission to safeguard shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, British media said on Saturday.

The move would allow the destroyer to contribute immediately, if needed, to a future operation aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in the waterway, Sky News quoted Britain's Ministry of Defence as saying.

Any plan would be strictly defensive and aimed at restoring confidence for commercial shipping, the ministry added.

In March, the ship was deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean to begin "operational integration" into Cyprus' defenses, according to the Royal Navy.

HMS Dragon's redeployment came after France and Britain proposed multinational escort efforts to restore navigation in the Hormuz Strait.

French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is also heading toward the Red Sea, the French defense ministry said earlier this week.
