A Hong Kong man died and another one was rescued after they were caught in severe weather and stranded on the Hida Mountains in Japan, local media reported on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old and 30-year-old hikers had been reportedly climbing the mountains since Friday.
Authorities at neighboring Nagano prefecture had conducted a search and rescue operation, but failed to locate the pair on Monday due to the weather conditions, according to the Japanese media.
On Tuesday morning, the rescue effort resumed. A 30-year-old man was found conscious and sent to hospital by a relief helicopter, but his 22-year-old partner was later pronounced dead after being located.
In response to media inquiries, the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said it immediately contacted the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Consulate General in Nagoya upon receiving the request for assistance.
The department said it has provided assistance in accordance with the wishes of the family members of the hikers.
