YANGON - U Aung Lin Dwe, a member of parliament from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was elected as the new Speaker of Myanmar's Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) in a parliament session held in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, according to state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV).

U Aung Lin Dwe was elected on the first day of the first session of Myanmar's third Amyotha Hluttaw. He became a member of parliament after winning the Amyotha Hluttaw seat in Mandalay region.

The first day of the first regular session of the third Amyotha Hluttaw saw full attendance, with all 213 members of parliament present, according to MRTV.

On Monday, U Khin Yi was elected as the Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) during the first day of its first regular session.

The USDP won a majority of seats in the Union Parliament in the general election completed earlier this year, according to official results released by the Union Election Commission.

Myanmar's Union Parliament consists of two houses, with a total of 664 seats, the 440-seat Pyithu Hluttaw and the 224-seat Amyotha Hluttaw.

Following the election of the House speakers, the newly formed Union Parliament will elect a new president, who will then form a new Union Government.
