The central government intends to further leverage the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions' unique strengths and important roles — derived from the backing of the motherland and from their close links with the rest of the world — and promote their long-term prosperity and stability, said Premier Li Qiang on Thursday.

This is one of the new highlights in the central government's work report delivered by Li at the opening of the annual session of the country’s top legislature, the National People’s Congress, in Beijing.

Compared with last year's work report, Li emphasized that the SARs’ role in the country’s efforts is to achieve greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology, noting that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will be developed into an international center for scientific and technological innovation and become a world-class innovation engine.

He also emphasized the SARs’ important role in the nation’s advancement, saying that “we will support Hong Kong and Macao in better integrating into and contributing to the country’s overall development”.

In the report, the central government pledged to resolutely implement the policy of “one country, two systems”, and promote the economic and social development of the SARs.

Li attributed the country’s remarkable achievements over the past year to the central government’s leadership and the united efforts of all sectors of society, including Hong Kong and Macao compatriots.
