CARACAS -- Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez said Monday that Venezuela has its own acting President and is moving ahead with its international relations, after US President Donald Trump posted an image on social media calling himself "acting president of Venezuela."

At a school year kick-off event in the Venezuelan state of La Guaira, she rejected any narrative that minimizes the role of Venezuelan authorities in the political leadership of the country.

"Here we have a government that rules Venezuela, here we have an acting President, and here we have a president held hostage in the United States," said Rodriguez, referring to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was seized by US forces along with his wife on Jan 3.

Describing the talks as "frank", Gil said participants reviewed the state of bilateral relations and agreed on the importance of advancing a productive relationship and seeking deeper dialogue.

Gil said Rodriguez's message was clear, stressing that "within a framework of respect and equality of states, we are willing to advance a new agenda" for the well-being of the peoples.

He said the Venezuelan side also used the occasion to assess the events of Jan 3, when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were forcibly taken into custody by the United States.
