Starry Lee, Ronick Chan vie for top LegCo job

HONG KONG – Starry Lee Wai-king from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and Ronick Chan Chun-ying from the financial sector have submitted their bids to become the next president of the Legislative Council.

The office of the Clerk to LegCo received the two valid nominations as the nomination period closed at 5 pm on Friday, according to a government notification.

The two veteran lawmakers will present their platforms and answer questions from their fellow lawmakers at a special forum which will be held at the LegCo Complex on Thursday.

The election of the president will be held thereafter.

The winner will succeed Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, who stepped down after a nine-year presidency deciding not to seek re-election.

Lee, the city's sole delegate to the National People's Congress Standing Committee, joined the city’s legislative body in 2008 and has since been re-elected four times.

Meanwhile, Chan, a deputy to the National People's Congress and an adviser to the Bank of China (Hong Kong), was first elected in 2016 to represent the financial sector.

Members of the eighth-term LegCo were sworn in during an oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, officially starting the four-year term of the new legislature.

Ninety lawmakers were voted into office through the Dec 7 LegCo general election, with 40 elected by the Election Committee constituency, 30 by functional constituencies and 20 by geographical constituencies.
