NEW DELHI – At least 10 people were killed and many others injured Saturday in a stampede at a Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, officials said.

The accident occurred at Venkateswara Swamy temple in Kasibugga of Srikakulam district, about 548 km northeast of Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, where a large crowd had gathered on the occasion of Ekadashi, an auspicious day in Hinduism.

"The heavy rush of devotees led to overcrowding, resulting in injuries to many devotees, who were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals," an official said.

Reports said the crowd at the temple swelled beyond expected numbers, and management was unable to manage the rush effectively, thus leading to the stampede.

Police feared the death toll was likely to increase.
