MANAMA - Team China added 13 medals on Friday here at the 3rd Asian Youth Games, including six golds, three silvers, and four bronzes, in athletics, taekwondo, and road cycling with athletics contributing the most with five gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
Track was China's main medal event. Lai Jianguang won the boys' 100m, with teammate Lin Xiaohai taking silver. Yang Jia claimed the boys' 400m title, and Yan Xinyi earned bronze in the girls' 100m.
China dominated the boys' 5,000m race walk as Zhang Haoze won gold in 21:43.82 and Lu Yujie took silver in 22:28.64. Combined with Liu Shiyi's victory in the girls' 5,000m race walk on Thursday, China swept both events.
"We tried to take control from the start," Zhang told Xinhua. "My teammate and I pushed the pace early and stayed in front. There was no complicated tactic-just executing the rhythm from training. It felt humid when we first arrived, but after a few days, we adapted well. We came for the title, so I'm excited and proud to win it."

When talking about the "encirclement" of the Chinese team in the men's and women's race walking events, Zhang Haoze said, "We were originally aiming for the championship. We were both surprised and proud to win the gold medal, which boosted our confidence in continuing to excel in race walking. We hope to bring more honor to our country in the future."
Zhang's coach Yang Kai said the team prepared using a "back-end surge" strategy. "We focused on the last kilometer, sometimes the final 800 meters, repeatedly practicing pace changes and control," Yang said. "We also emphasize teamwork on the road: if one athlete feels strong, the other helps set the pace. For these young athletes, consolidating fundamentals, maintaining technical stability, and preventing injuries are key to long-term progress."
In the field events, Wu Huaichu won the boys' javelin, Wang Xinyi took gold in the girls' discus, and Bi Zaoxin secured silver in the boys' high jump.
In Taekwondo, Zhang Qing triumphed in the girls' +63kg division while Pan Yuhan took bronze in the boys' -48kg.
