WUHAN, China - China's Yuan Yue scored a hard-fought victory in her opening match at the 2025 Wuhan Open on Monday, edging Italy's Lucia Bronzetti in two tiebreak sets, while Wang Xinyu fell to Japan's Uchijima Moyuka in straight sets.

Yuan, ranked No. 69 in the world, battled for two hours and 21 minutes to defeat Bronzetti 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1) in a match that featured long rallies.

"It was a really intense match, both sets went to tiebreaks and every point felt important," Yuan said. "I'm happy I handled the key moments well tonight."

The victory was special for Yuan, who had lost to Bronzetti 6-1, 6-1 in their only previous meeting on Italian clay in 2021. "Back then I lost pretty badly," Yuan said. "I'm very happy tonight, as looking back now, I can really see how much I've improved over the past few years."

Yuan's next rival will be the 7th-seeded Jasmine Paolini of Italy.

Also on Monday, Moyuka, the world No. 91 who had defeated Alexandra Eala of the Philippines and China's Wang Xiyu in the qualifiers, went on to beat Wang Xinyu 6-4, 7-6 (6) after two closely contested sets.

Wang Xinyu, who fought back from 5-3 down in the second set to briefly lead 6-5, was in tears after the defeat.

"I didn't play at my level today," she said. "It's been a tough stretch mentally since the China swing this year, and I'm still figuring out how to deal with that pressure."

In other matches, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova cruised past Canada's Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-2, while 10th-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark defeated Serbia's Olga Danilovic 6-3, 7-5. China's Zhu Lin also crashed out in the first round, falling to 19-year-old Australian Maya Joint 7-5, 7-6 (10).
