Australian woman charged with daughter's murder dies in prison

SYDNEY - An Australian woman charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter has died days after being found unresponsive in her jail cell, the police said on Monday.

Lauren Flanigan was on Tuesday charged with the stabbing murder of her daughter at a home in Moore Park Beach, over 300 km north of Brisbane in the state of Queensland.

The 32-year-old was found unresponsive in her prison cell at the Brisbane Women's Correctional Center on Friday and was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

The Queensland Police Service said on Monday that she died on Sunday night.

Flanigan was due to appear in court in July and had not indicated how she would plead to the murder charge.

News Corp Australia newspapers reported that she was being held in a specialized crisis support unit for high-risk prisoners.
