MADRID - Athletic Bilbao on Friday announced that Spain Under-21 international midfielder Mikel Jauregizar has signed a new contract to remain with the club through June 2031.

Jauregizar, who joined the club four years ago from his nearby hometown club Bermeo, opted to stay despite reported interest from Real Madrid and Premier League champion Liverpool.

"It's a very special day for me because I've dreamed of this since I was little, playing for the club I've supported all my life and doing so until 2031 and perhaps even longer," Jauregizar told the official Athletic Bilbao website.

The 21-year-old made his first-team debut last season while still featuring for Athletic Bilbao's B-team in Spain's fourth tier. He took a major step forward in the just-concluded campaign, making 48 appearances totaling 3,220 minutes and scoring three goals as Athletic reached the Europa League semifinals and finished fourth in La Liga.

"Last year we won the Copa del Rey, now we've qualified for the Champions League. I know a lot of people tell me not to get used to this kind of success, because it is very difficult, but I try to make the most of every moment, because I believe I am privileged," said the midfielder.

Jauregizar will switch shirt numbers next season, giving up the No. 23 jersey he wore this year to take over the No 18, vacated by club legend Oscar de Marcos, who played his 573rd and final match last weekend against FC Barcelona before retiring.

"It was a very special moment when he (De Marcos) told me he'd be excited for me to wear it. He told me it was in the best hands and that I had to wear it. Having one of your idols tell you that is a great moment," concluded the midfielder.
