Organizers of Hong Kong megastar Jacky Cheung’s 60+ Concert Tour in Dongguan postponed on Tuesday, shifting the event from June 6-8 to Aug 29-31. The decision came following backlash over scheduling conflict with the gaokao, China’s national college entrance exam.

In a statement posted on Weibo, Guangzhou Heguang Feiyang Cultural Media Co Ltd (广州禾光飞扬文化传媒有限公司) acknowledged the criticism, saying that the delay aims to “balance cultural events with societal responsibilities”.

Apologizing for any inconvenience to those who purchased the ticket, the organizers outlined a compensation plan which includes full refunds available through various ticketing platforms by June 3. Those who choose not to request a refund can attend the concerts in August.

Travel and accommodation support are also offered. Concertgoers traveling to Dongguan will be eligible for compensation upon presenting proof of losses incurred from canceled tickets or hotel bookings.

The initial June dates drew complaints from parents of students taking the gaokao on June 7-8, particularly those whose children will sit for the exam at a school near the concert venue.

Some netizens however questioned this reasoning, saying that the concerts are scheduled for the evening while the exams take place during the day.

Local education authorities earlier said multiple meetings were held to address the issue, stating that assessments indicate minimal disturbance from the stadium to the school located 1.6 km away.
