HANGZHOU, China - The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships entered its penultimate day on Wednesday in Jiangshan, Zhejiang province, with Chinese athletes Liu Huanhua, Tian Dongping, and Jiang Yujia delivering standout performances.
Liu, the Paris Olympic gold medalist in the men's 102kg division, faced off against his arch rival Hasanbayev Davranbek of Turkmenistan once again. In the snatch segment, Hasanbayev took an early lead with 182kg, while Liu's final attempt at 183kg fell short, leaving him with silver. Kazakhstan's Aatropov Artyom claimed bronze in the snatch.
The tide turned in the clean and jerk. Hasanbayev faltered with a modest 195kg lift, while Liu opened with 220kg and sealing victory at 230kg. Though his bold 234kg third attempt - aimed at breaking his own world record - ended in failure, Liu secured double golds (clean and jerk 230kg, total 410kg).
"My performance aligned with training expectations, though missing that final 234kg attempt left a hint of regret," Liu reflected post-event.
Tian edged teammate Jiang in the women's 87kg category. Tian triumphed with 118kg (snatch), 141kg (clean and jerk), and 259kg (total) for a golden sweep. Jiang's 113kg-140kg-253kg secured three silvers.
