1 dead, 2 missing in residential area blast in North China city

BEIJING/TAIYUAN - One person was killed while two others remain missing in a residential complex explosion on Wednesday afternoon in Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi province, according to local authorities.

At present, 21 people are still receiving treatment in the hospital, including six with serious injuries and 15 with minor injuries.

The blast occurred in the Beiying neighborhood of Xiaodian district at around 1 pm. As of 3 pm, the fire triggered by the blast had been extinguished.

After the explosion, Taiyuan set up a command center to carry out on-site rescue operations and arrange for the resettlement of affected individuals.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Emergency Management has sent a working group to aid rescue work and investigations following the explosion.

Upon receiving the accident report, the ministry immediately conducted a video conference to coordinate on-site response efforts and dispatched the working group.

Efforts should be made to conduct thorough floor-by-floor searches, urgently verify the number of trapped individuals and provide full assistance to the injured, the ministry noted, calling for a scientific and safe rescue approach to prevent secondary accidents.

Local fire and rescue teams have dispatched 210 personnel and 43 vehicles to the scene, according to the ministry.
