President underlines need for a multilateral approach to face climate crisis, highlighting just transition pathways
President Xi Jinping has called for upholding multilateralism and international cooperation in advancing global climate governance, highlighting the just transition pathways to achieve climate ambitions.
Xi made the remarks on April 23 in a video speech delivered at the Leaders Meeting on Climate and the Just Transition.
He said that although some major country’s persistent pursuit of unilateralism and protectionism has had a serious impact on international rules and the international order, history will, as always, move forward despite twists and turns.
While emphasizing the importance of upholding the international system with the United Nations at the core and the international order underpinned by international law, Xi underlined the need to jointly respond to the climate crisis through multilateral governance.
He called for rising above estrangement and conflict with openness and inclusiveness, boosting technological innovation and industrial transformation through cooperation, and facilitating the free flow of quality green technologies and products, so that they can be accessible, affordable and beneficial for all countries, especially developing ones.
China will vigorously deepen South-South cooperation and continue to provide help for other developing countries to the best of its capability, Xi said.
In accelerating a just transition, Xi said developed countries are obliged to extend assistance and support to developing countries, help drive the global shift toward green and low-carbon development, and contribute to the common and long-term well-being of people of all countries.
Noting that China is a steadfast actor and a significant contributor in promoting global green development, he said that regardless of changes in the international landscape, China will not slow down its climate actions, will not reduce its support for international cooperation, and will not cease its efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
