Startups and entrepreneurs on Thursday hailed the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone — a pivot for Shenzhen-Hong Kong cross-border synergy — as an ideal test bed for low-altitude economy development bids and a prime go-global launchpad.

Around 66 enterprises have established themselves in the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch since its opening within the Shenzhen Park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone in 2023, official data reveals.

Among the entrepreneurs based in the park is Zhuang Jie, co-founder of Shenzhen Transport Information and Technology Co Ltd, a leading smart transportation solution consultant. He pointed out that the cooperation zone serves as a testing ground for initiatives seeking to capitalize on the low-altitude economy boom, thanks to its geographical proximity to border checkpoints.

Zhuang said that while many Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperative bids are still in their infancy, it is a certainty that such partnerships will benefit the country’s long-term technological progress.

He added that he hopes to see more regulatory adaptation to bring about further institutional alignment and standardization.

Meanwhile, with its close links with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the zone is increasingly recognized by many mainland businesses as a favored platform for tapping into international markets.

Yu Chen, chief executive officer of Haptron Scientific — an innovator in optical force sensors based in the park — said that his company aims to double down on leveraging Shenzhen-Hong Kong collaboration to attract global top-tier talent, enhance product technology, and expand its overseas market presence.

Yu also said that, amid the current global trade turbulence, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s capacity for providing robust supply chains for the company’s research and development ambitions helps shorten the development cycle of downstream products.
