Payload specialists from the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions are due to embark on their first space missions as early as next year, the China Manned Space Agency said on Wednesday at a press briefing for the launch of its Shenzhou XX manned spacecraft.

The announcement follows the completion of the fourth batch of selections for astronauts in October 2024, which included two payload specialists from the two SARs and eight pilots from the Chinese mainland.

CMSA Deputy Director Lin Xiqiang said the two SAR specialists, who joined the national astronaut corps in August last year, have adapted swiftly to their training environment.

He said while training timelines vary by astronaut category, the specialists are progressing on schedule.

Upon certification, they would be included in the candidate pool for flight crews.
