BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.33 percent to 3,116.39 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.56 percent lower at 9,541.64 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices reached 847.7 billion yuan (about $119.23 billion), up from 831.3 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares related to gold and nonferrous metals suffered major losses, while reversing the downward trend, those related to military defense were among the biggest gainers.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.38 percent to close at 1,852.07 points Thursday.
