BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.83 percent to 3,154.32 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.55 percent higher at 9,788.07 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 901.1 billion yuan (about $126.87 billion), up from 864.4 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares related to lithium battery and real estate sectors were among the biggest gainers, while those in the liquor-making sector declined the most.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.87 percent to close at 1,900.01 points on Thursday.
