BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.74 percent to 3,021.98 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.61 percent lower at 9,183.14 points.  

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices reached 775.35 billion yuan (about $109.11 billion), shrinking from the 822 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares related to education and humanoid robots led the gains, while those in the precious metal, coal and hotel sectors suffered heavy losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.15 percent to close at 1,753.16 points Tuesday.
