A summer internship program that allows Hong Kong Special Administrative Region students to work as interns in Chinese mainland and overseas branches of large HKSAR enterprises for at least six weeks opened on Monday, with 1,400 students applying for positions.

Addressing the launch ceremony of the Scheme on Corporate Summer Internship on the Mainland and Overseas 2023, Eric Chan Kwok-ki, chief secretary for administration of the HKSAR government, said that 24 enterprises will provide more than 320 internship positions in mainland cities Beijing, Tianjin and Chengdu, as well as Singapore and Sweden.

Alice Mak Mei-kuen, the secretary for Home and Youth Affairs of the Hong Kong SAR government, said that about 1,400 students had applied for positions

The enterprises include mainland internet giants Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings, as well as local corporations Sun Hung Kai Properties, MTR Corporation and Airport Authority Hong Kong.

The programs will cover positions in financial, logistics, retail and other industries, with the enterprises bearing the transportation, accommodation and salary allowances of interns.

Chan added that the program would rally the strength of the SAR government and the enterprises to provide new development opportunities for young people in Hong Kong.

Alice Mak Mei-kuen, the secretary for Home and Youth Affairs of the Hong Kong SAR government, said that about 1,400 students had applied for positions.

The summer internship program was launched in 2018 on a pilot basis, before being suspended in subsequent years because of the COVID-19 pandemic

With the resumption of cross-border exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland as well as other places, the government is resuming various internship activities in an orderly manner to provide more opportunities for Hong Kong young people to the mainland and overseas, Mak added.
