HONG KONG -  Officials of the central government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have denounced a so-called resolution of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Hong Kong and the irresponsible rhetoric about the city made by the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China. 

A spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR said they slandered the National Security Law for Hong Kong and human rights and the rule of law in the city, and showed support for anti-China forces in Hong Kong, including Jimmy Lai Chee-ying.

The spokesperson said that these moves only make the world see clearly the true sinister intentions of these politicians to whitewash anti-China elements and to undermine Hong Kong's rule of law.

The spokesperson pointed out that under the national security law in Hong Kong and the new electoral system, the rule of law in Hong Kong has returned to the right track, and the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents are better protected in a more secure environment.

The whole Hong Kong society and international stakeholders know Hong Kong's new situation and are confident in Hong Kong's future, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson emphasized that the rule of law is the cornerstone of Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, and Hong Kong society must run on the track of the rule of law.

The successful practice of "one country, two systems" cannot be distorted or reversed by some narrow-minded and groundless smears, and the sustained implementation of "one country, two systems" cannot be stopped by some statements or resolutions, said the spokesperson.

The office urged certain US politicians to correct their positions, recognize reality, and immediately stop interfering in and smearing "one country, two systems" and Hong Kong affairs, otherwise they will only be confronted with repeated failures.

In a separate statement on Thursday, a spokesman for the HKSAR government said it strongly condemned and firmly rejected the fact-twisting remarks and smears in the so-called resolution and the commission’s remarks about Hong Kong. 

"The HKSAR government strongly condemns and firmly rejects the US politicians' fabrication of the so-called resolution related to Hong Kong and release of fallacious remarks to smear the implementation of the NSL, interfere in law-based governance and undermine the rule of law in the HKSAR,” the spokesman was quoted as saying in the statement.

“Since the implementation of the NSL in June 2020, US politicians have been repeatedly exploiting different incidents and occasions, as well as creating excuses, to attack the HKSAR in its dutiful, faithful and lawful implementation of the NSL,” he added.

The spokesman said they have also deliberately neglected the fact that the implementation of the NSL has enabled the livelihood and economic activities of the Hong Kong community at large to resume as normal, and the business environment to be restored. 

“Their bullying acts with politics prevailing over the law, and their hypocrisy with double standards, have been fully exposed,” he said.

“The politically motivated attempts by US politicians to undermine, by despicable political maneuvers, the HKSAR's due administration of justice and the city's prosperity and stability will only expose their own weaknesses and faulty arguments and be doomed to fail," he added.
